Where it is necessary to transmit thousands of kilowatts over a considerable distance, wire large enough to transmit it at 120 or even 240 volts would have to be so big that the cost would be prohibitive.Yet, when a relatively small wire and a much higher voltage are used, the voltage is high so high that it is dangerous to use on ordinary equipment. A transformer therefor changes on ac voltage to a different ac voltage. Thus, higher voltage can be used on low voltage complexes or visa versa.
